Air Conditioning

Post by Richard S » Sat May 18, 2002 7:57 am

The home I'm looking at has dual 3 ton units. They are Intertherm Single housed units. In other words, the Evaporator is in the outside unit and it uses 14" ducts that tie into the homes duct work.
I haven't seen 7these systems used in 20 years. Most everyone now days use a split system. Solitaire is telling me they use this system on this particular home because of its size and it has more air flow? They are SEER 12 units, but it seems that there would be an effeciency lose due to the added heat outside and the duct work.

Any Opinions? Advantages and disadvantages?

It sounds very odd.
The self contained units you mention are not very unusual..But this seems much too much a/c for this size home...If the insulation is anywhere near where it should be...A 3.5 or 4 ton a/c should be all that is necessary....

We use 2 ..2.5 ton units on a T shaped 3000 sq. ft. home...

We use single 3.5 ton a/coils or sometimes 4 ton self contained units on the size you have mentioned..When we do an Energy Star (see www.energystar.gov ) home, it has 12SEER rating and programable thermostat.

You might want to check with the plant and a HVAC expert in your area..

GOOD LUCK
