Dual AC Units

Post by Richard S » Sat May 11, 2002 7:58 pm

I'm looking at a 28x78 Solitaire which has dual 3.5 ton ac units. The vent systems are not tied together and each system has ducting for half the home. I noticed the thermostats are not tied together either, but they are about 8 feet apart. This home has a ton of windows, 3 in room except for the baths and the 2 kids rooms. Its a Model 990 in case that helps.

1 unit cools 2 bedrooms and kitchen, and Master Bath while the other unit cools the family room, den, dining, and master bedroom. Both inlets to the evaporators are side by side in the utility room.

Does anyone out there own a home with this set up? Does it work? I figured that the thermostats would be tied together to keep the units from fighting each other.
If they had seperate returns and the thermostats were in different areas I could see the advantage as far as different temp settings in different rooms.

I appreciate all input.

Dual systems can save you a lot of money. I have 2 air units in my home and I'm able to keep the part of the house that we occupy during the day very comfortable and the other area we keep several degrees warmer. This differential saves us as much a hundred dollars a month during the Florida summers.

The way the zones and returns are set up may be a different story. Ours are total independent of each other. But I do know that different parts of the country require different types of climate control. Bring the floor plan to a reputable air contactor in your area and ask him what he thinks
