permanent addition

Post by lorijorge » Sat May 21, 2011 3:47 pm

I have never owned a mh before. I recently started looking into purchasing one but have found that I have questions that seem to remain unanswered. As simple as they may sound, I still have no answers.
Can I add a permanent addition to a dw? I would like to build a master bedroom/bathroom but have it be a permanent structure. Can this be done?

There is nothing simple to it. buying a manufactured home is complicated. Like any other type of home manufactured homes ARE permanent and can be modified and improved over time.

Read these forums, come back often and ask away..Remember the only dumb question is the one you do not ask...There are many here who will help. Most posters here were like you but have gotten their homes and want to help others like you.

There is no reason that you can not add more rooms to an existing manufactured home. My home is half manufactured and half block. I have also owned manufactured homes that we added framed rooms onto. You need to check with your local building department office to see what they will require to issues permits.

"Additions to a mobile home are a tricky area, requiring lots of skill at the planning, engineering, and building stages, as you're about to find out. There aren't the simple, couple-of-spare-weekends project that TV shows can make them seem to be. You will have code requirements to be met, and park requirements if you're not on private land. The resale of your home may be negatively affected, too. Even if you know you can build the best addition possible, a prospective buyer will probably not be knowledgeable enough to judge the quality of what you've built. Most people who don't have an easy way to tell if something is good quality, or a good deal, pass it up" more details

You can definitely add on to a MH. We added a basement and a room upstairs with steps leading to the basement in 2003, on a 1996 Fleetwood.
