I am purchasing a Fleetwood single wide and setting the home up in central WI. and am setting up the home on a acceptable slab for the home as mandated by the the people who tell us how to run our lives. {Comm 21.40 (1)}
I have studied the instillation manual along with several online sources and talked to a couple people in the know on doing this project and feel comfortable on doing it myself. I have extensive mechanical background and also have moved and leveled heavy machinery such as precision machining grinders & centers. Some weighing as much as 20 tons.
However, one of the last people I just talked to said that in WI it illegal for me to set up the home myself.
Now, this is also a person that wants my money to set up my home.
Can anybody tell me if this is true or not?
If it is I find it absolutely ridiculous that a person can build their own house but cant level and anchor their own mobile home.

Re: Setting up a single wide
Check with your local building permit official...but this info is probably correct....HUD mandated ALL states to regulate the set up process and most have complied...Almost all states REQUIRE ONLY licensed set contractors to get permits and stand ultimate responsibility for the correct set up....You might find a contractor who will allow you to do some of the sweat labor but few will let you use their license to meet the requirement because if they are caught the license could well be revoked and him fined thousands of dollars...Good Luck..

Setting a wood framed home is quiet different than leveling steel constructed equipment. The wood frame can rack causing wall and ceiling damage through out the home. The highest percentage of problems that are NOT covered by warranty come from a home not set correctly or improperly handled during the blocking process. Find someone with a license and experience blocking homes, so you don't void your warranty.

Miss information flying around all over.
I do not need a concrete pad by law. I can set up my own home by law. I got that info straight from the man who has the final word, the inspector.
Funny how the people who want to sell you the product fill your head full of lies to help line their pockets.
And yes, the person who wanted to sell me a home told me I had to have a concrete pad and they would do the concrete work.
Now the inspector told me the installation manual is exactly how it is to be set up.
It calls for 14 tie downs including the longitudinal tie downs.
The company that wants to do the install told me I needed 2. And you say I should use professionals for this work?
I will be doing this work myself to make sure that it is done RIGHT and no corners are cut trying to save a buck.
I'd like to thank you all for your replies but Dave I must respectfully disagree with you about the metal working machinery.
These things are precision instruments that need to be leveled within .0005 of an inch over many many feet. In my case up to 45ft. If done incorrectly it could cause 100's of thousands if not millions dollars of damage rendering the machinery incapable of holding the tolerances needed by the customers.
Also if handled improperly you could damage the CNC systems making a 4 Million dollar grinder useless.

If you want to enjoy your home for years to come the site prep and installation must be handled properly. if you're planning on doing the work yourself, it is critical that you understand the entire process.
