Buying a Palm Harbor?

Post by Gary Donner » Mon Dec 18, 2006 12:29 pm

I've done extensive research on MH dealers in Pahrump Nv,& I was curious why Palm Harbor seems to be much more expensive than other dealers (Cavco,Fleetwood,Redman,Skyline, etc) that offer the same floor plans, upgrades & sq. footages? Palm Harbor quality appears to be better than several of the homes I've looked at, but the price difference is substantial. Ten/15K. I really like PH, but not sure I want to pay the much higher price. Can anyone give me any info. on the "Durango Series" by Cavco? I've heard the "Durango" is an upgrade from there standard Cavco. One of the floor plans my wife & I like on the PH, is the La Jolla. Might anyone have this home, or know where I can get some pictures , inside, outside, etc.?

Your Palm Harbor housing consultant should be able to explain in detail what the differences are...A few that come to mind..tested, proven energy features such as Energy Star ready, a factory 5 year buyers protection plan, and provewn highest resale value in all the industry...

Your consultant will gladly arrange a plant tour where you can see all behind the walls..If your housing consultant does not seem to be helpful..ask for a meeting with the Palm Harbor General Manager...You did not mention if you are looking at the homes in the subdivision they have..If so location and subdivision features make up a substantial component of the price..

Do yoursaelf a favor and give them a substancial amount of time to answer every question you have...

Thanx for the info,Murray. Any comments are appreciated. Our home will be placed on our 1 acre of property. If all works out to our satisfaction, the home will be a PH. Another ? I have is about the eave overhang. From all I've read, 12" is better than 3"/6" overhang so there is less chance of water damage to the walls. I know the wider the home, the less the overhang. PH has several 30' wide homes ( La Jolla)which give you a 3" overhang on the front & back. The ends are around 12"s. We like the wider homes, but may have to sacrifice the overhang. They have a promo model (29') called "The Have It All". The 29' wide home would give you more overhang, opposed to the 30' home. This may not be a major issue, but having more eave also looks more pleasing. Any comments? Thank you!

The PH homes are different from each plant...here in GA they all have 12 inch eaves....But 3 inch is plenty for the function you mention...You could emphasize the eves with 6 or 7" gutters...They will make the eve look deeper and carry the water away...I forwarded your last post to Joe Zaky the GM in your area..Hope he or your sales pereson call you soon to give you more info on Palm Harbor..

Move to Augusta, GA and I will show you one of ours...

Thanx again Murry... The gutters on a 30' wide sounds like the way to go. Are you or anyone else out there familiar with a product called "Tech Shield", a sheathing with a thin laminated aluminum layer for the roof, which is said to prevent up to 97% of radiant heat from entering the attic. Has anyone had any feed back on this product? PH does offer this on there homes. If it doe's what it says, this would be energy saving in the desert climate. By the way Murry, two of my Navy buddies born & raised in Georgia, would love to have my wife & I move there.
