Earlier today I was talking to a contractor on the phone and he gave me some useful insight on roofs that were hit by a hurricane.
When looking at roofs, he noticed how metal roofs were blown apart and shingled roofs were stripped. He said the roofs that seemed to survive the best were those covered with a rubber membrane (like the polyvinyl at the link below).
When a rubber roof is installed, it wraps over the edge of the roof and is secured. Apparently this is really helping the roof survive if cheap rubber isn't used. The difference between cheap rubber and polyvinyl (for example) is the fact that polyvinyl has threads imbedded in it which helps keep it from tearing if the membrane is punctured by flying debri. Once regular rubber starts to tear -- it's bye bye.
The contractor seemed to think that once this hurricane season gets past, Florida will get tough about roof types so rubber may become a big option.
All worth pondering anyway.
