Air hammer

Our home is located on a rise above the well, about 100 feet. This is causing air hammer from the hot water side as the hot water heater is the highest point in the water system. It only occur on the hot water side and with only the hot water faucet turned on, causes some pretty forceful spitting from the faucet. What can we do to get rid of this problem? You probably need an expansion tank and/or hammer arresters on your faucets.

That was my first thought, but doesn't really explain where the air is coming from, unless it's coming from somewhere in the line between the well and the home or from inside the hot water heater (heat set too high?).

Do you have a holding tank?

Hooking an expansion tank to the hot water heater solved the problems I've run into thus far.

Another item to check - I've seen this in regular homes.

Check your hot water faucet for a loose washer - tjis can also cause air hammer.
