Any pros and/or cons on hinged roofs. I have been looking at Fleetwood's new line here in NorCal with a 6/12 pitched roof (Waterford Series). I'm told that the hinged roof is for transporting the home. The home is a 30'x68' DW with 9' side walls. I have looked at over 100 different models in past year & this roofline really caught my eye.
I value the wealth of info on this forum & my thanks to all for many questions answered before I had time to ask them. BTW, are Randy's books as valuble as they sound on this forum? I'm still looking at many different models & sizes.
Thanks Again,
Craig in NorCal
Hinged Roofs....?
Re: Hinged Roofs....?
Craig, hinged roofs are fine as long as the installtion is done correct....on some homes where the hinge is there is usually a gap about 1-2 ins. after it is raised ...as long as this gap is covered with flashing (as most set-up manuals call for) before the shingles are added it will be fine
Re:Randy's Book
Randy's books, while not on the best seller list, are worth it. They will open the
eyes and let you see the possibilities, while avoiding the major pitfalls. Many
things in a home purchase can be left to the dealer to decide if you don't
specify them. Randy's books covers darn near everything to help the consumer
become more knowledgeable about the do's and don't's of making a major
home purchase.
good luck

Re:Randy's Book
We were looking at several models with 6/12 pitches and hinged roofs. We were assured that they were sound if set up correctly. Additional advise we were given was to 1) make sure the set up crew has experience with this type of roof 2) Go see a set up they've done/talk to the owners. Hopefully, the retailer and contractor have had experience and can give out names of satisfied customers. If not.....
Re:Randy's Book Debbie
Debbie,
being completely honest, It takes a well built house and a good and experienced crew to make the best job......you can have well built home (all measurments exact) and a poor crew and have a mess ....you can have a bad home (measurments off ) and have good crew and have problems...what i mean by measurments off is one model of home that fleetwood had,(my have been corrected by now) one half of the home was 4 inches longer than the other and i have seen homes that one half was 3 inches taller at the peak because someone got off on there measurments in the plant and didn't allow for the angle on the marriage wall...a very experienced crew can make some of these problems be very minor in the end....ask around ,the bad crews will be known.... alot of dealers want the cheapest and in most cases the cheapest is that way for a reason....they can't get work any other way...
hope this will help and good luck!
