Cost of remodeling

Post by JoAnne Pumphrey » Sat Apr 06, 2002 8:00 am

I too am a first timer! Relocating to St Petersburg area. This appears to be a settled area with little new MH available. I am willing to remodel for a waterfront home but have no idea to costs of 1) replacing paneling with wall board, 2) a roof over, 3) new bathroom or kitchen fixtures etc.
Should a contractor for this specialize in manufactured housing or is this the same accross the board?
I am definitely using the services of a home inspector and making the sale contingent upon this report. Thanks for validating this.
Looking for comments and/or thoughts of more experienced MH owners.
Thanks!

You can get special primer now to paint over the paneling in older mobile homes (and some do it without it), so you don't have to have it all sheetrocked (aka wall board).

What do you mean by "roof over"? An entirely new roof to replace a metal one, or what? I'd like to know the answer to that one, too (assuming doulbe-wide).

You are right about the market there.....the best locations are all full...renovations can be costly...but not always...there is a tape available on this site that might help..or you might go to www.mobilehomerepair.com and post on their web site as well..

As far as roof overs are concerned...they are very popular there...Iwould talk to the park manager for advise..also stop in other homes with them and ask about their experience and costs...

As far as replacing with wall board, you might want to think of filling in the panelling divets with drywall joint compound, sand smooth, prime with Kilz or BIN primers, and paint. It's alot of work, but much less expensive than replacement. Trust me, you might not want to see what is behid the panelling anyway. I did this to my mothers cottage, and it looks great.Good luck.
