plywood over original flooring

Post by Dan » Sun Aug 17, 2003 11:24 am

I am new to this site. I'm assuming this site deals with mobile homes as well as manufactered? If not, then flames are welcome. Otherwise, here's my question. Would it be unwise to install 5/8" plywood over the original flooring (pressboard) so that one could laydown laminate or vinyl flooring? I was thinking just cut out the pieces to fit, screw them down and fill in any cracks with floor leveling compound and then apply the primer recommended for the new flooring. Any comments welcome and hope to return the favor sometime. Thanks.

I believe your best bet would be to use luon board, you can just lay it over old press board and your suface for new flooring would be smooth.Unless your flooring is caveing in.Then you need to replace with plywood first.

Welcome..I will not have much help on your question...

But what the public generally calls mobile homes...are in fact manufactured homes...yours is unless it was built prior to 1976..

Your questions are always welcome here...

I did that in my 18 wide Gallitan. We had a water leak that rotted part of the particle board. After fixing the leak, I patched the hole where there was no longer and p=board, then went over the top of the entire linoleum floor in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room with 3/4" acx plywood. (overkill, but what the heck). That was 11 years ago, and needless to say, the floor is holding up well. make sure you "stagger" your sheets of plywood if at all possible so you don't end up with 4 corners meeting in any one area.
