Going to Factory!

Post by Melissa » Tue Jun 04, 2002 10:46 pm

We have a "date" at the factory this Thursday to see a home like ours. Of course it will be in pieces, but we'll be happy with what we get to see :) I was wondering if any of you have gone to the factory to monitor your own house being built, or if you can even do that. Once we get to that point my husband would love to actually watch them doing some of the construction. See if they actually put the upgraded insulation in that we will be paying for, etc... you know, stuff like that. We just made an offer on the property we want and the man accepted. Off to escrow we go on Friday. Looks like we are on our way....

Wonderful....have fun at the plant....It will be reassuring and you will leave happy...Ask them about coming to see yours built...It usually is on the line about 3 days...The time to go is day 2..

Keep us inform of your progress....Educating yourself as you have will make this a fun time now...

Have you got all of your decor ideas and furniture placement dome in your mind yet...The fun is about to begin..

Home decor? LOL!! I haven't even thought about it! I suppose I will have to decide a few things yet. To be honest I don't even know what all the options are. I know my husband got a basic quote with the options he thought were most important...upgrades in insulation, carpet, appliances, siding, etc. We haven't actually sat down and "ordered" our home yet. I'm sure I'll have to make a lot of decisions at that point. The only one I am debating at this time is...solid oak cupboards?....or fake oak?? Solid oak will cost $900 more. I would like to have the solid, but perhaps I'd be just as happy with the other? Decisions, decisions...
What are some of the options y'all would suggest??

Another problem we are facing is finding a general contractor familiar with placing modulars. The people we are buying the home from usually can do all the ground prep, etc. but since we live to far away all they are willing to do is delivery and set up. We have NO idea how much the ground prep is going to cost us because we can't find anyone who can give us a quote! It's rather frustrating. We have gotten a few referrals but no one will call us back! I guess generals are in high demand here. Anyone out there in the Antelope Valley (CA) area who could suggest a good contractor? My husband could do a lot of the work himself, but the loan process requires a licensed contractor. ....Just one more hurdle to jump...Yipee :)

About those solid oak cabinets - - - - I know the male readers will disagree with me, but for $900, I'd go for the oak veneer. What does a cabinet do that would require solid oak? I've got "el cheapo" cabinets in my 18 year old house now and they are "performing" beautifully - why pay that extra expense? (I like a white kitchen, anyway)

Then get white cabinets...If the standard cabinets are pressboard with a picture on them..I would invest in the upgrade..

OK, we went to the factory but to be honest it wasn't a real big help. the home was of course in three peices so it was REALLY hard to visualize the completed home. We did get the scoop on all the different "options" available. I have to agree with the one who posted that they nickle and dime you to death. It seems anything worth having is an option! The standard home construction is the best we've found in these parts though which is very important. I'm just afraid that when we are done with the options we won't be able to afford the home! :) It wasn't a wasted trip though, we did come away with more info than we went with. Info is good :)
