Traditional to Manufactured
Re: Traditional to Manufactured
On a MH you are only extending the floor joists 14-16' because you have two halfs to a milti section home with headers on both halfs. On a site built you have a span as wide as the home. Most homes with a basement will have an I-beam in the middle for support, pier and beam and slab will not. Unless a home is really shoddy or there are other problems, water damage, termites a 2x10 will provide enough support.

Scottman,
Sorry you are so unhappy. I have asked my friends what they thought - unanimously, they think it's a great value for the money. I will have my mortgage-burning party years earlier than was possible otherwise.

Re: Traditional to Manufactured
I'm not unhappy, just stressed. I'm getting a good reputable local guy to come out and relevel and check the set the original yahoo's did on my house. I think it will be ok, and I will be too, after therapy.

Re: Traditional to Manufactured
Dear sir...Don't buy any champion mobile homes, they are junk and they don't honor there warranty....Also anytime you need to replace anything like a tub, door knobs, hot water heater, you have to order them...Also plumbing and eletrical is a joke in mobile homes...Most mobile home fires are due to an electrical fire...Plumbing you have to take out walls to replace or repair plumbing problems...Roofs will start leaking within 5 years of buying a new mobile home..And its all most inpossible to get the dealer to come out and repair problems of any kind..No matter what they say or put in writing...I've been through all this and in 17 years have had to completely to rebuild and remodel my mobile home...When the dealer does send someone out, its several weeks or months later and the problem you have is now huge....I paid 33,000 dollars for my m/h brand new and have had to put 35,000 into it to where it would last me for a LOMG TIME....17 years ago i could have bought a good house for the 68,000 dollars i now have invested in my mobile home.....
Re: Traditional to Manufactured
I assume somehow you would have bought a stick built that NEVER needed maintenence...Come on..you look pretty silly with these posts..
Re: Traditional to Manufactured
I have both a stick built home and a MH, or since it is a 1976 it is a mobile home. I have replaced the roof on both houses, stick and mobile, I have replaced the furnance and A/C on both homes, I have painted the outside and inside on both houses and both had some ceiling spots from leaks, I have replaced the windows on both and when I had to replace a shower valve in my stick built I had to enter through a hall wall to get to it. All of these things are called home maintainance and if you own a home of any kind you have to do it if you don't want to renting is an option.

Mr. Munore,
I agree with Murray, you do look & sound silly with your petty gripes. This is called NORMAL WEAR & TEAR, be it a stick build, MH, or even a metal building - things happen. For you to bad-mouth the manufacturer is not right or fair. As to the fact that repair persons would not come out is not a manufacturer issue, it's a DEALER issue.
On to reply of other posts in this comment, we moved from a stick build ot a MH and do not regret any of it. I wish we had a basement, but that is our problem, nothing to do with dealers or manufacturers. It had to do with high water tables in the area. We moved from the city to the country - farm land, and where we are at in northern Michigan, we have a LOT of MH's on private land. There are many repair people that work with MH's strictly, have never had any problems finding anyone. We have a Coleman/Intertherm furnace 90% efficient, new in 2001, and it has an odd size furnace filter - by odd I mean you can't just run down to the neighborhood Wal Mart and pick one up, but our ACE Hardware carries all sizes. Our kitchen sink is an odd size, but not impossible to find replacements. I will admit that the new MH's now have acrilyc sinks that I cannot stand, they stain so easily, but there are companies that deal strictly with MH replacement items and I can get a stainless steel sink from them for the same cost as going to HOme Depot. Plumbing and electrical is the same - stick build -v- MH. Would we buy another MH, and a REDMAN home ? IN A HEARTBEAT. Remember folks, when looking at a home, look and ask thousands of questions of the dealer also. They are the ones that you will be dealing with before, during, and after the sale. We have a WONDERFUL dealer / sales & repair crew.

Re: Traditional to Manufactured
I am not a manufactured home owner even tho I always want to be one. I live in Bay Area where manufactured homes are not very common.
I know many different brands as a shareholder in several manufactured home companies. I visited some local dealers which are not close to where I live. I had to drive 50 miles out to check models out.
The brand that stands out is Skyline. Skyline homes are only ones certified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). Skyline also manufactures camping trailers that are Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) certified, too.
I have not inspected models of any brand for past several years since. What I know for sure is you will get your money worth from Skyline. Wink my eyes...
