wood siding / room addition

Okay......here is what the original plan was.......to make a door way leading to the room addition (all single level.....not planning on going up!). We wanted the room addition to be a great room. So after reading your posts & having concerns.......the way I understand that if we "alter" the original home in anyway, it will not be to HUD guidelines........but what if we used the existing sliding glass doors to lead to the great room (instead of cutting a door in the window) with a breeze way type of walkway to a great room (being all self supported). Would this be a better move? Or should we really just scratch this whole idea? But without the addition - the log siding will not void any HUD guidelines?
