Plumbing 1983 Palm Harbor double wide

Post by 2012marsha » Wed Oct 24, 2012 9:48 am

Hoping someone here can help. We are putting new Pex water lines in. We are at the master bedroom bath and can not find where the plumbing lines are to the master bath in the shower area (inside lines). The front bathroom was easy as we just had to remove a piece of paneling in the dining room to access the lines in the wall inside. Thanks

The pluming lines are in the wall where the head end of the shower sits. Just like the other bath. If the head is on an exterior wall, and you have a one piece shower or tub you will need to open the wall from outside the home. If you have a shower or tub with a separate wall surround you can open the wall on the inside of the tub and replace the plumbing and surround.

Opening the wall from the exterior side can be a challenge with lap siding. I have re-plumbed about 30 homes. When we find this situation, with the shower or tub on the exterior wall and it is not exhibiting any plumbing problems, we change out the plumbing under the floor and leave the plumbing in the wall as is. In many cases, considering the time skills and funds to remove and re-install the siding - if it ain't broken don't fix it.

Normally, the lines would be where the shower head etc. is. This isn't the norm here.... because there is a closet with a 5 ft gap between the wall and the shower head area and a hot water heater in the way. We bought this place about a year ago and it has the old gray "pain in the rear" water lines so we are replacing them with Pex. We are tired of fixing leaks and getting no where. We found out that bath was remodeled three years ago so we hope it was done right and since it is not leaking now or causing any problems we are going to redo all we can with the Pex and leave that area alone until we are left with no choice. Taking sound advice, If it ain't broken don't fix it. Sometimes we just need to hear the obvious from someone else!
Thanks for the fast reply.

David did give very sound advise!

We have a 1990 On-The-Frame Modular in NJ & it has the grey pipe. Gotta say (knock on wood) we've had no leaks. But whenever we make any modifications, we replace the pipe with PEX.

Like we had to replace the water heater, we plumbed it with PEX. Where we joined it with the grey pipe, we used Shark Bite connectors. They work well with both the grey pipe & the PEX. I swear by the Shark Bites, yeah, they're expensive, but they DON'T leak. Much better than the crimped connectors work on the old grey pipe.

Thanks for the thumbs up. We did find the water lines we were looking for. They are behind the hot water heater! We will have to remove it to gain access. Can you believe that? The water heater in it now is a Kenmore dated 1996, still working fine but just in case, I ordered a new one. We will be so relieved to have this project completed. Thanks again for your help.
