new home roof options?
What are the advantages of a metal over a shingle roof or vise versa? We have seen both now. The metal I think is called a gaviline and is often avalible in colors?

Re: new home roof options?
I think your talking about Galvalume
Prepainted Galvalume roof sheeting is mostly used to enhance the appearance of the home using color, form and texture. For residential roofs, prepainted Galvalume® sheet is generally used, although some architects and home owners use bare Galvalume sheet because they like the look of its bright metallic surface.
Galvalume sheeting is an ideal material for roofing because of its extraordinary outdoor corrosion resistance and resulting long life. It can be readily rollformed into a variety of panels, as well as formed and stamped into tile and shingle facsimiles. It can also be factory painted to impart color and extend durability. Most important, it can be used in modern day steel roof designs which are strong, yet light weight. And unlike conventional nonmetallic roof systems, Galvalume sheet roofs won't crack and peel when subjected to the sun and weather.
Atmospheric and climate conditions are key elements to consider. Corrosive microenvironments from local industrial operations can exist that influence the performance of Galvalume steel roofing. Likewise, marine exposures can be severe, making the location of the Galvalume steel roof with respect to the shore line an important consideration.
Benefits
There are many benefits of owning a metal roof. Here are just a few to consider:
Energy Efficient
Metal roofing is on the leading edge of technology with a wide variety of finishes, designs and colors that provide greater energy savings compared to most other non-metal roofing products on the market today.
Sustainable
Metal roofing is sustainable. It contains significant recycled content. It lasts much longer than most non-metal roofing products. It is 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life.
Low Life-Cycle Costs and Durable
Metal roofing has been proven to be more durable than most other roofing systems available. As a result, metal roofing has low life-cycle costs making it the choice of many school, government, commercial, industrial and institutional building owners.
Fire and Wind Resistant
Metal roofing is extremely fire resistant and can be designed to withstand strong winds.
Lightweight
Due to its light weight per unit area, structural savings can be realized in a building when compared to using heavier non-metal roofing alternatives. For re-roofing projects, metal roofing can often be applied over the original roof, saving removal and disposal costs.

Re: new home roof options?
This type of roof is fairly new to manufactured housing and there has been no track record from the new home builders to fall back on... I buy, renovate and resell older manufactured homes. We have put Galvalume roofs on several homes with excellent results.
We are in Florida where air conditioning is the greatest annual cost to home owners. We have installed 3 inches of Styrofoam sheeting under the roof metal. which has resulted in significant saving on electric.
Three rental home that we own with Galvalume roofs went through the hurricanes of 2004-05 with out any problems. One had a good size tree limb crash down on it and never even flinched. The installation is a lot easier than shingles and should last at least twice the expected life of shingles.
There are several variations of sheeting. The "standing seam" is the most expensive but is as close to leak proof as any roof design in history, as there are no exposed seams or fasteners.

It looks cool. Thanks for sharing such a nice photo. By the way I too roofed my house through the service which I have hired from a roofing company.
Re: new home roof options?
A metal roof is a much better option than the traditional roof shingles. It is not only much safer, it also lasts longer, and is more economical for your ac. If you are looking to replace your roof I would go with a metal roof.
