Hi, We recently purchased a mobile home that has a propane gas ventless fireplace. We love it as it heats the family room so efficiently. The previous homeowners used metal from a pole barn to create a box around it. That part of it is unattractive. I am wondering how to build a mantle that will be more appealing. Can I build a nice mantle from wood? Does it need to be lined with anything? How far would it have to be from the logs for it to be safe? Right now the box is 24 in. tall about 8-10 inches from the flame. I refer to it as a box as it has top, sides and back with nothing in the front as far as glass windows, firescreen, ect. Thank you for your help.

Ventless Propane Fireplace
Re: Ventless Propane Fireplace
Find the manufacturer of the fireplace and contact and request the installation manual. it will give you all required clearences.
If you look inside the fire box, you can find a metal label that will identify the manufacturer.

Re: Ventless Propane Fireplace
You might want to do some research on ventless propane stoves/fireplaces before you decide to keep, upgrade and use it. These applicances have been associated with dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in some homes, especially energy-efficient homes that are well-sealed against outside air penetration.

Re: Ventless Propane Fireplace
From the latest stuff I've heard about ventless heaters/fireplaces, I wouldn't use one as my main heat source. Too dangerous. Would maybe work as a temporary backup or out in a shop where its used once in awhile.
