TRAVERTINE?

Can I lay travertine on my floors? It is much heavier than porceline tile, (it can be up to 7lbs per sf) The total sf in our house is 1500 sf, and we would be covering about 1000 sf of it. (That's about 7,000 lbs of weight!) Our home is held up on jacks, but has a permanent foundation.

Depends on the floor joists and foundation under your home.If you have at least 2 by 6 or better joists on 16 inch centers,a solid subfloor, and a block foundation on concrete footers you should be OK.
However if you do go ahead with this,it is a must that you use a concrete backerboard under the stone(Durarock,UtilityCrete or Wonderboard)
Secondly hire someone who knows how to float in a floor,you won't like the result if it is simply notch trowled in.A stone floor either looks beautiful or horrible after its installed.It all depends on the installer.

I'm willing to bet that, without adding a great number of additional foundation piers, you cannot. And any reputable tile installer would not.

What are your floor joists made of?
What size are they?
How far apart are they spaced?
What is the maximum span of the joists?

You need this info first, before you could even consider a regular wood or tile floor, much less stone.
