1/2 or 3/8 drywall?

Post by Bill » Wed Jan 14, 2004 8:07 pm

I'm soon going to be replacing some wallboard in our Dutch. It currently has the typical vinyl wallpaper over 3/8 drywall, which has been painted over. Wondering if I should stick with the 3/8, or are there any compelling reasons I should or should not go with 1/2 drywall? Plan on eventually doing all the rooms except for the kitchen & utility rooms, where I put up panneling.

The only time I get nervous about putting up drywall, is with pre-hud homes. The added weight can cause the outside walls to sag, particularly if someone added a new roof over the old. Newer homes handle it much better. However, be sure your home is level prior to doing any wall or ceiling work. If its not, and you do the mods, the walls may crack or bow if its re leveled at a later date. Tom

I'm assuming this would not be an issue if the home is on a cement block foundation (as is the case with mine)? I can certainly see how that could happen without a perimiter foundation. - Bill
