Warning - Fairmont homes

Post by Andrea Prewitt » Wed Apr 20, 2005 7:05 pm

I bought a Fairmont home almost 2 years ago. I told the salesman I could not buy this home because of the danger sign on the cupboards. Both mother and I have breathing problems. He assured me the the goverment made them put signs in all the sites. But there was nothing to worry about. All I have to do is air the home out for a few weeks. I have been airing it out now for 2 years. It is my opinion that the salesman lied to me amd that Fairmont has done nothing to take care of this problem so far. Iwill be putting a sign up at my Millbury home and at the trailer sight that I am a unhappy Fairmont customer.

Andrea, ALL NEW HOMES OUTGAS. All of them, every single one. Drywall, carpet, vinyl, panelling, paint, all the materials used to build a home outgas some of the products used to make them. Most of it goes away (or drops below detectable levels) within a few weeks.

SOME people are particularly sensitive to some of the outgassing components and it is for those people that those signs are there. After 2 years, I believe any outgassing the home may have had to do is done. Either there is something else in the home (such as a HUGE mold problem) or you are just too sensitive to live in a new home. It is no longer outgassing.

My question is, why didn't you notice this when you were walking through the home on the lot? You said (in another thread) that it effects you immediately upon entering.

Interesting topic, I'd been meaning to ask about this. When I did the walkthrough on our new home, after about half an hour, I felt like I was "at altitude" light-headed and headachy. I realized I was being affected by the fumes referred to on the warning labels. And in retrospect I remembered feeling similarly when looking at models on the lot, but I chalked it up to nerves or fatigue at the time. The tech said he didn't feel it, but at any case, it was probably strong because the house had been closed up for awhile. I just hope the first few weeks of living in our new home don't feel like I did that day.
