a division of Patriot. The salesman said it had graduated ducts, which means they get smaller the further away from the heat source they are (I think!), and that causes a stronger air flow, thereby eliminating uneven heating (or cooling) over the entire house. Do these work?

Graduated ducts actually means that the ducts are larger or smaller,
depending on the size of the room. A large room with more sq. footage
would require a larger duct than say a smaller sq. footage room. The
distance from the heat source does play a roll in the size, but not a large
one. The salesman was kinda sorta correct.

We have also been looking at the Pinnacles and the Heritage models.
Very nice homes. Much better than the PH's in the construction and
price departments.

I think you understood the salesperson correctly...Many manufacturers (many that you have mentioned you have looked at) offer this feature..Cavalier for instance...All duct systems are designed to solve this same problem..

One thing for sure...you found a salesperson who is well trained..
