hot water leak

Hot water has been leaking we just found out it in home inside walk in closet. the floor is wet behind toilet. so WE THINK THE FLOOR THERE AND UNDER HOT WATER HEATER NEEDS REPLACING. The 1 floor joice there is damp should we replace it or what. Husband thinks its ok just need to cut out part of floor that has been wet. Oh we are putting water heater under home this time.

If there is no rot on the floor joist , open the bottom vapor barrier, remove the insulation. Get a mold inhibitor from Lowe's or any home improvement store and spray the entire area. Leave it open 'till it is totally dry. The last time I did this here in Florida (the humidity capital of the world) it took several days
If the floor decking is in good condition you can do the same. If the floor decking has started to deteriorate, replace it.
Removing the water heater from the living area is a good idea. You can get much the same protection by installing a catch pan with a drain under the new water heater. In the event of a water heater leak the water is captured in the pan and flows out the drain, under the home. These pans are a standard item sold fro as littel as $12 wherever water heaters are available and look like this...
