self-tapping screws

we have several loose screws in the exterior of our mh. it was suggested that we use 1" self-tapping screws with tops that were sealed with a caulking compound. the screws already in the exterior are 1/2" or 3/4" and are a bit rusty. using 1" screws sounds like a great idea. wondering how thick the two-by's are that I would be drilling into. Any ideas? psaltee
