We are about to start some home renovation projects. We were wanting to tile our kitchen,utilityroom and bathroom and then put in hardwood throught the rest of the house. our floor joist are 2x6 on 24 centers and i was wondering if we would need to reinforce the floor joist by adding support to them? We dont plan on moving the house and i was wondering if the floors would be strong enough to hold the added weight of tile and hardwood. Also how do you go about the tile? do you add 1/4 inc hardibacker directly to the subloor and then tile on top of that? we have plywood subfloor but i dont know what size. our home is a 2002 powerhouse by cavailer. Hardibacker is best behind vinyl lap siding or vinyl tile products. If you are installing ceramic tile install cement backer board over your plywood floor.

The additional weight will not be much per sq foot and should not be a problem. The thickness of the plywood floor should be no less than 3/4 to avoid flexing that could crack the tiles and keep you replacing grout.
