Replacing Garden Tub w/Custom Shower

Post by dragonfur » Sat Feb 20, 2010 11:16 am

I have a 1999 DB (Palm Harbor) with a nasty garden tub. (It's in the afternoon sun and has turned a truly hideous yellow/grey shade on the sun-exposed surfaces.) I have used it twice (the plumbing was done incorrectly, I guess, and it takes literally hours to drain, plus our water pressure isn't great, so it takes a while to fill, too!). I want to remove it and install a tile floor/sides and glass door w/glass on two sides.

What all do I need to know about adding multiple shower heads and the tile that isn't standard info for any home? Also, what do I do about the slow drain? The stall shower we have now does not have that problem.

One last question: What is below the drain pan in the stall shower, and what will we need to add to make it a FLOOR? (It'll be a linen closet when I'm done.)

Eleven years of direct sunlight will not have a good effect on a fiberglass tub.  We are in Florida so I know exactly the color your seeing.   A tiled shower floor generally starts with casting a shower pan that tiles are applied to after it is set and plumbed in place.   Watch this video to get an idea of what this project might be like.    There are a dozen skills required to complete this job and you may want to consider a premade shower kit.  If so Visit The Mobile Home Parts Store to find a selection of shower kits that will work for you.   Also see the following from our articles archive: Repair or Replace a Manufactured Home Bathtub Replacing or Repairing a Bathtub Drain

Belated thanks for the thoughtful (and helpful) response! Haven't gotten this project done yet, been wrestling with others--more to do with repairing and upgrading the horse barn than the house! I am beginning to look into this one, though.
