I used your book to help tear out bathroom floor and am putting in pressure 3/4", I cut around flange for now so flange is connected with small 8" area of subfloor dangling.

Must I put a new flange in or can I unscrew from subfloor piece, then put new subfloor in and then rescrew top of flange to it?

If I have to replace a flange, is there a way to connect one WITHOUT using cement etc., is there one with like a rubber insert. Must it always be cemented to the drain?

Finally, if I decide to put tile in, I will have about 1 inch added to floor with backerboard. How does the flange adjust? Must I cut off of drain and cement new one at higher level?

Hi,

You always get a better job if the toilet can sit on one full piece of wood. In order to do that, you'll have to cut the flange off.

The next option is to splice two pieces of flooring around the flange. This would create a seam right at the flange. To add strength, you may also have to add extra 2x4's for support.

As for raising the flange, extensions can be purchased to increase the height of the flange.
