There is a built-in dresser in the master bedroom which does not match my furniture. Is there a good way to refinish the dresser (lighten it), or would I be better off trying to remove it?

You can make a huge difference in the appearance. Refinish the top with new Formica, selecting from hundreds of colors and styles that are available.

The front and/or draw faces can also be recovered with Formica (matching or contrasting) or painted any color that suites you. When we renovate I always replace the hardware with brand new handles and (if there are any) doors hinges. This is important to give the built-ins a complete new look.
