No Electric Box Above Mirror?

Time to get rid of the ugly strip light in the guest bathroom....so I go to Lowes & pick out a reg. fixture. We take down the old one, & of course the wall behind it is not textured. so I have to get out the drywall mud, fill in the difference & texture it & paint. That done, there is nothing but a hole with the 3 wires sticking out.......I had bought a 4 in round plate to mount to the wall to support the light, but after it was screwed to the wall very solidly I might add, the fixture will not flush up.......seems the 'lip' of the plate won't fit all the way into the back of the fixture.....either I find a different light with a deeper back plate or we put in one of those blue plastic boxes with the 'arms'......I sure don't want to cut a hole big enough to put that in....any suggestions? And any hints on putting in one of those blue boxes just in case would be appreciated.....
