1994 Pines-interior painting

We would like to do some paiting on what I guess is paneling. It does not look like wood paneling. What type of primer is recommended.

I used KILZ primer on my wood paneling. If the surface is shiny, you might want to take some sandpaper and rough it up a bit before priming.

Thanks. The surface feels like wallpaper is the only way I can describe it, but when we put a closet organizer in, it was like drywall. Thanks for answering.

We recently painted two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We asked the paint department at a local home center and were told to use an oil based primer and then we could paint with either an oil based or water based paint. Since we purchased a used home, we were told if we thought there were odors in the walls to use a shelac based primer.
