Removing popcorn ceilings

I would like to update the look of my popcorn ceilings in my 17 yr. old home. I've thought about taking a putting knife to them and scraping it off and then retexturing them, but it's all guesswork on my part and I don't want to be left with a bigger project to fix if I'm wrong.

Has anyone ever attempted to do this and were you successful? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Yep, your on the right track. Before scraping, spray with a mist of water. This will help control the dust. Then scrape off with a putty knife. Maybe first try it inside a closet to be sure the popcorn comes off OK.
