Proper way to attach porch

I want to add a porch to the front of my home to match the dormer. I know it has to be self supportive, but how do you attach it so it looks like it belongs there and won;t leak?
I like to use two boards that look like they form a corner, but actually they are separate and allows the porch to move independently. A strip of weatherstripping seals out the weather. Hard to explain on the forum, but my book does a decent job of explaining this with illustrations.
