we're having problems with those tiny black ants getting in the kitchen. I see them around the counters and also my dishwasher. Help!

Do yourself a big favor and call an exterminator. Dont mess around with them they are bad this year. Good Luck

I've never seen anything like plain, old ammonia for disrupting ants. I used to work in a store which was in an old, historic building. I was cleaning out the window display one day and saw a steady stream of ants marching through a crack in the window and on into the store. As I had a bottle of Windex in my hand, I gave them a squirt (as I had found out before that Windex is good for stunning/killing wasps) and went about my business. A couple of days later, when I went back to stock the window, I noticed there wasn't a live ant anywhere to be found. When I looked outside, I noticed they had a trail going some a different direction from the window crack.

My thought is that, since ants travel by pheremone scent trails--especially those little bitty black ones--when you give that scent trail a squirt with ammonia, they not only can't find it anymore, the ammonia scent will drive them away. So if you have a trail of ants coming into your house, give them all a good squirt of Windex. The Windex will kill the ants and they won't come back that way again for a long time.

I've also read that you should trim back bushes, plants and tree branches to keep them from touching your house, as these offer ants easy access to your house. Also, don't plant peonies close to you house. My grandmother told me that in order to open their blossoms, they have to have large, black ants to work on them. She said if you kill the ants on the bush, it won't flower. So if you have peonies, it's not a good idea to exterminate for ants, but at the same time, it's not good to have the close to your house, as they attact ants.
