Flooring

I removed the carpet in my family room and the floor underneath is a board type flooring. In some areas the boarding has bumps from liquid soaking through the old carpet and padding. I want to lay self sticking parquet type or laminating flooring. Should I sand the bumpy areas of the flooring before laying the flooring?

If you have partical board flooring (looks like sawdust glued together), then any areas that got wet and are bulging you may want to cut-out and replace with plywood. Once partical board gets wet, it tends to become weaker over time. Actually, it becomes weaker from use whether its been wet or not -- but it gets weaker much faster if its been wet.
Laminated flooring is a great choice because you first lay down what almost looks like carpet padding. Then the laminate flooring itself is floating (not fastened down), so if the home shifts and moves with the season, it won't afffect the floor.
Self-sticking tiles in my opinion are a disaster waiting to happen unless great care is taken to install them (i.e. priming the floor, sealing the seams, etc etc). Most people just stick them down and a few months they have shifted and moved or popped up, and the seams start attracting dirt and they just look terrible.

Mark:
Thanks for the information.
The flooring looks stronger that particle board. It has a stamp on it that says,
"decking" I'm thinking it's probably used to create floors for patio decks.
I'll check out your book
