Uneven floor joists
Uneven floor joists
I own a 16 x 80 manufactured home which is one year old. It was constructed using engineered floor joists every 8 feet on centre with conventional wood joists in between. Due to shrinkage of the wood joists I now have ridges across the floor every 8 feet. Can this be repaired and how?
Re: Uneven floor joists
If your oversized wood joists are shrinking every 8', I would think that you would have dips instead of ridges..
I have seen plywood expand from moisture and cause humping, and would require you to take up the flooring and make cuts in the seams until the pressure is removed. Make sure your home is dry in the belly.
You can also use a 1x2 and a string line. Rapping the line around the board so it comes off the top side and anchoring it down to the floor (carpet area only), you can pull it tight and measure the gap between the line and floor to see exactually what is humped or sagging.. This also can be done from the underside of the home once you have full access to the floor joists. You can make repairs using 4x4 posts and 8" lags to the underside floor joists to raise, lower joists. (Cutting and overlaying joists may be required using 3/4" plywood, liquid nails and screws) I would recommend someone familiar with floor issues in Manufactured Homes to tackle a job like this if your not familiar with the details I have just described..
I will give you more detailed advice if you feel you have the ability to tackle the job yourself. If not, Ill leave you with a way of figuring out what you can do to check and repair your problem.
Good Luck,

Re: Uneven floor joists
Thank you for your response. However it is not the engineered joists which are placed 8 feet on centre that are shrinking but the conventinal joists in between causing high points at the engineered joist locations.

Re: Uneven floor joists
What size are the floor joists?
What is the spacing of the joists?
What grade of wood are the joists made of?
What is the span of the joists, measured between supports, not total length.
You may need to go under the home and add a support in the centerline of the home using 4x4's and floor jacks.
