this is kind of a dumb question but, are the light fixtures in mobile homes a different size than a standard home? I have florescant lighting in the kitchen, but the fixtures seem rather narrow.

They can be, depends on the manufacturer. Alot of the interior of older homes have odd sizes on just about everything. Manufacturers buy items in bulk, some are specially made for manufactured homes. Generally thats why we have a very hard time finding exact replacements for just about everything. Its alot better than it used to be however. We home owners have to use the Marine Corp quote alot of the time, "Adapt and Improvise". Tom

Yes, put in whatever you like. The only things that are absolutely MH-specific are heating systems, fireplaces and such.

I just put in all new "standard" fixtures I picked up at Home Depot. The ceiling boxes are pretty much standard (in my home anyway... 1994 Dutch).
Only thing you really have to keep in mind is that the boxes are more than likely NOT anchored or attached to a ceiling joist, so the weight of the light fixture is definately should be a consideration.
