Faux Ceiling Beams

I would like to put faux beams on my ceiling along the seam lines. How would you suggest I do this? I know I will have to use a very lightweight wood. I was thinking maybe a Balsa, but I'm afraid that would be to light.

Believe it or not, there is a product out there that is styrofoam, and looks like a dark wood. I only know this because I have some in my home. I have no idea where it came from or what it is called, but I lived in the house for a year before I realized it wasn't wood.
