acoustic ceiling tiles

We're purchasing an 81 MH and hate the acoustic tile lining the vaulted ceilings. If we remove the tile, can we expect the rafters to hold wallboard/mud replacement, or to have drywall under the tiles so we can texture and paint like walls?
