soffit strength

Hello all,
I am looking for advice to back me up or prove me wrong. I am a handyman that mainly installs Sunsetter awnings. This guy bought an awning because the salesman told him it could be hung from the soffit. This a 1969 home with 2x2 construction. I do not believe it should/could be safely and securely hung so I turned down the job. The awning weighs about 150 pounds and is a huge lever when extended. Am I wrong? Is there a way to beef up the soffit to support the load?
I tried to attach a photo but can't get that to work either!
