Back Steps

Post by Starlight » Tue Aug 11, 2009 12:55 pm

Hello,

I live in a double-wide manufactured home, and have fallen twice down the back steps. I'm looking for information as to whether the steps are up to code and standards and are safe to be using. I have called my local city department and left a message, so am now waiting for a return call.

In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and what was your remedy? It looks as if there isn't even enough room to put up the type of landing and steps that my state requires, but I don't think the other homes in this park have the required landing, either. I'm wondering how to proceed with this.

You dont say what state or city you are in so it is difficult for anyone that might know the local code and how it is enforced to comment.

Most building code authorities around the country only added a code for mobile home steps in the last several years. Prior to that many localities required steps but did not prescribe standards. If your home falls into that category then the existing steps might be grandfathered. Building codes generally dont require the retrofit existing structures when most new additions are added to the code.

If you own the home, even if you are renting the land, any upgrades will in most cases and jurisdictions be your responsibility. Visit the Mobile Home Parts Store. Check under EXTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS. You will find new steps available in a range of types from economy steps for about $50 up to beautiful modular decks in all sizes.

You may just find that the simple addition of a hand rail could give you the added stability on the steps that you are looking for.
