Water Heater Too Hot

Because I have an above ground water tank in the summer I set the thermostat back on the water heater. This year it doesn't work. I have moved the dial back and forth several times and the water is extremly hot. As I turn the red knob I can't hear the little click you usually hear when doing this.
It is a Rheem propane heater.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the thermostate is burned out... call a local Rheem dealer for parts and service.
