refinish or replace vinyl panels?

Post by newlyfree » Fri Aug 10, 2007 2:22 am

I am moving into a fairly new Fleetwood home. The walls in the living and dining rooms are tape and textured; however the rest of the walls are the vinyl panels. Can I just put drywall over them, paint them, or what? Do I have to remove them to put up drywall or anything else? I appreciate any advice!

There are many approaches to this project...The book store here offers a quality repair and upgrade manual that does have a section on this exact topic...You can find it here it might well be useful for other future projects as well....

The vinyl panels ARE drywall (sheetrock) that has been pre-wallpapered prior to installation in the factory. Talk to the folks at your local paint shop about the right primer to use. You can paint these panels or remove the trim between each one and tape and texture the walls.

I like to remove the trim and put up conventional wall paper in the bathroom and kitchen. This gives those rooms a unique appearance from the rest of the painted walls in the home. Any type finish that you have seen on drywall can be applied to these panels.

If your a do-it-yourself type and need more information see The Manual for Manufactured Home Repair & Upgrade

Even if your MH needs no repairs at the moment you should strongly consider how you will deal with them in the future. With "The Manual" next to your tool box you will be ready!

Wow, thanks for the info! I never dreamed they were already sheetrocked. I did order the book, and I think I will see about removing that thin strip between the panels, as suggested. I like the wallpaper in the kitchen and bathrooms, but the bedrooms are a solid rose color. I also like your suggestion about applying your own wallpaper.

Did you remove the strips in between the panels, or just paint over them?

condensation

Post by goldiestar » Fri Aug 17, 2007 10:47 am

I have a singlewide yr 2000 clayton. I live in SE houston, tx. It is very muggy and humid here. I keep the ac on very cold at night while I sleep. In the morning, my mirrors and walls are dripping water. What can I do?

Humidity will always condense onto cold surfaces...Be sure to run bath vent when in use, and run the stove vent when cooking. I assume you leave the a/c on all day (maybe at a higher temp) so it can remove as much moisture as possible. Read your owners manual for more info on moisture control..
