I just painted over the horrible dark brown and yellow flowers which were embedded into the wood of the walls in my bathroom. I discovered these after I removed the wallpaper for painting! (See my previous post and responses.)
After consultation with Lowe's, I purchased Golden Harvest No-Strip primer. It goes on grey, and covered them completely with one coat. It is sold for covering wallpaper, but this was a similar task. Good product, recommended on This Old House site also.
I plan to paint over it with a good quality semi-gloss, hopefully needing only one coat, but I'll do two if I must! It's worth it never to see those horrid flowers again!
(Were we actually this tasteless in the 70's??)
Update: painting over horrid flowers imbedded into the wood!
