flooring?

Post by Eddie Woods » Thu Jan 20, 2005 10:43 pm

Bought a single wide clayton home 20x78' anyways the floor in the kitchen is starting to squeak, and is going into the living room same area about three feet from exterior wall. Is this due to shifting? or improper leveling. and how do I fix this without causing damage to floor coverings?

Thanks Ed Woods

When floors start to squeak, generally the first thing you want to try is tightening the bolts along the frame. If you look underneath the home along the big i-beams, you'll see bolts. Tighten these bolts in the area of the squeak along both sides of the i-beam. Don't overtighten as you don't want to strip them.

There can be more than one cause. Floors in MH's do squeek, its almost universal. The home being unlevel is one cause, slight shrinkage of the flooring wood. Missed nails or screws, ect. The natural shifting of a MH, particularly during the winter/spring thaws can also cause them. Tom
