Do i seal my roof with foam??

Post by Richard » Thu Sep 02, 2004 10:50 am

Dear all

I have recently bought a house. I noticed soon enough that the felt under the roof tiles was missing, over the years i guess it has all fallen away and there is none present. I wish to seal my roof before the bad weather comes in. I have been quoted £3500 to remove the roof and re install all the felt and tiles. I have been told that there is an alternative, some sort of spray on expanding foam. Is this a good idea, i have been told it will cost me in the region of £400.

Is there any other way i can seal my roof??

Please reply to my email address.

Richard, not knowing the methods they use in the UK makes its a little difficult to give advice. Im sure there are differences in methods and products used. My advice to you would be to get a second estimate from a different company. That way you can read the two and see if they are comparable in what they suggest. Tom

Thanks for that, i did just as you advised and the next quote came in at £1200. Looks like i was on the verge of being well and truly ripped off by yet another contractor.

The guy i am using knows the history of the house oddly enough, it was build in 1955 and they only used some sort of paper in the place of out modern felt. He has completed works on many houses in my area so he should do a good job.

Thanks

Yes there are other products that you can seal your roof with. Again I too am not familar with what roof coating can be used in that area. There are some elastomeric roof coatings that seal the roof that lasts about 5 to 10 years. I am not sure if they use Koolcoat or Polar Cap in that area.

If it were my roof I would find out more about this foam product on the Internet and see if there are any reviews are on it. Can you ever replace you shingles after the product is on and how long does it last. Sometimes cheaper is not always better.
