install wood floors?

Post by Rita » Sun Jun 13, 2004 11:34 am

Does anyone know--would it be a bad idea to install wood floors in my 48X28 manufactured home, if there is ANY chance at all that I may decide to have it moved in the future? It just seems like there could/would be some potential problems at the marriage line....I bought this home used; the carpet and pad in the living/dining area are pretty beaten-down. I'm just considering all my options.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Rita, I have worked in the floor business as an installer for years.Genuine wood flooring is installed in a staggered formation. It would be very difficult to pull out sections through the center of the house over the marriage line.I would rethink this option !The wood sections are locked together in grooves and either glued or nailed with a special tool. The whole wood floor expands and contracts as a whole to prevent warpping.
There are some "Wood Tiles" that also are staggered that may be eaiser to take up and re-sinstall depending on how they are installed.
I would talk to a few pro's on your area. Good luck

Thanks, that's about what I thought. Hopefully, by the time I can't stand the carpet any longer, I will have a more definite idea of whether or not I would seriously consider moving this thing. You were very helpful; thanks so much.

Check out the Pergo type flooring. These are floating floors that are not attached to the subfloor. It is installed by locking the edges of the boards together. If you need to move, they can simply be pulled up as needed. They are also very tough and have super good warranties.

Each manufacturer has different requirements, you need to check the installation instructions for the particular floor your interested in. Tom

im not a flooring guy, however, i have installed lamanent flooring and i know that it is a "floating floor system" it doesnt attach to the floor. and you can run the seam down the marriage line of the house so that when you move you just split the seam, it works great in a manufactured homes. and like someone else said it is very durable. and much less expensive than wood flooring. just dont tell your wood floor installer friend what your doing, pergo is a bad word in thier language.

How long ago did you put your pergo flooring in and how is it holding up? I am trying to convince my spouse that it will work in our home and he is worried because our mobile home has some real uneven spots in the flooring especially around the marriage line.
