Insulation replacement

Post by Tony » Tue Jun 01, 2004 9:32 am

I am remodeling a 1997 Redman Homes double wide. I am thinking of replacing the insulation on the 2 X 6 wallls since they only used R-11 and from what I understand, these walls should be R-19.

The home seems to use a vapor barrier outside the sheating underneath the vinyl siding, so inside they used insulation without paper. Should I use paperless insulation as well? HD and Lowes only stock papered or encapsulated R-19. Would using either of these trap moisture?

Thanks in advance.

Lowes and HD both sell unfaced unsulation, I've bought it.

That being said, the barrier on the outside was probably to protect whatever is under it (OSB?) from water intrusion. As long as it was installed correctly, you shouldn't need a faced insulation.

I'd sure wonder why they went to the expense of installing a 2x6 wall and then didn't use the right insulation. If you are the original owner, I'd go back over my paperwork and find out.

Unfortunately I'm not the original owner. The MH has 2 X 4 front and rear walls and 2 X 6 (gable) end walls.

I know HD and Lowes stock different products in different areas. I'll ask them if I can order some.
