Repairs to floor

Post by Jean » Fri May 28, 2004 8:10 am

Hello, I have a 1983 14 * 60 singlewide. My kitchen floor is falling in, it dips way down in several places. It has gotten to the point that I have moved things out of my kitchen because I am afraid it will go through anyday. The floor actually looks like is starting to seperate from the wall. This is also happening in front of my living room window and my back door, but it isn't as bad yet. My question is what is making this happen? What will it cost to fix it?? and How do we go about it?

Also, We do not have central air, just a window unit. My husband wants to get central air, but someone told us that becuase it wasn't made for central air it would take more than just buying the central air unit. Is this true? With all that needs to be done to this place and all that we want to do would we be better off getting a new place? Thanks!

Tom

Jean, the standard floors in MH are just particle board. If they become wet or moist, they will rot. Sounds like thats whats happening in your case. The only fix for this is to tear out the old floors and install new plywood. You can either hire someone to do the job or if you know someone with decent carpentry skills, its a doable job. There is a book available with pictures and instructions on how the job is done. Go to http://www.mobilehomerepair.com and click on the books and parts link.

As for the Central Air, contact a local mobile home parts/service/repair company in your area. You might also look in the yellow pages under furnace, air conditioning, etc and look for a company who works on your brand of furnace. They may not be able to do the work, but can refer you to someone who does. Tom
