window mounted air conditoner

I want to install a window air conditioner but the window it would go in is the old crank window. First, how do I remove this type of window and then how do I build a new casing to hold the mount for the air conditoner. Is this a "do-it- yourself" type project or should I be calling someone who installs windows?
