insulate crawl space

Post by mickus57 » Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:07 pm

Much of the insulation and underbelly had to be removed from purchased mobile home. Has anyone just gotten rid of all that old insulation and built an insulated crawl space.

Yes I have done it many times and work well if done right. Seal it tight, perimeter insulation and good well sealed vapor barrier on walls and ground.

IMO I would avoid laying insulation on the ground instead of up between the joists. If you do , don't forget the vapor barrier and imagine having to crawl over that insulation when service was needed..

I have a 23 yo mfg house. It has the belly wrap & cellulose insulation within it. My house is on a 3' block crawlspace, cement floor. I live in southern Michigan. I've had many opinions from removing belly wrap & insulation & just having perimeter/floors sprayed foamed to just spray foaming the walls or putting up foam board on walls. Was told spray foaming the floor could damage the ductwork because most older mfg homes use flexible ducts off the main trunk. I have a pellet stove that keeps my living room/kitchen plenty warm but beyond that to the bedrooms, it's a 8-10 degree difference cooler.

What is the most effective way to insulate underneath? I've had more insulation out in the walls already.
