We deal with used Mobile Homes on a daily basis, Typically we can find the VIN # to verify the status of the Mobile Home title, but occasionally we can only find the HUD #. Is there a way to use the HUD number to get the VIN #? Is there anyone at HUD who can provide this information?

If you have the owners name of the home you can call the county and they can do a name serch and find out what the serial numbers and HUD tag #. If this is a used home you can call the previous insurnace company and they will also have the serial number and tag number. If you run into a dead end on both, you can get a title bond, which can take months and be costly. IBTS is very helpful, you can also contact them.

You may also (if you have the serial #) contact the Factory and get an original MSO, but you have to have the serial # in order to obtain.

Hope this helps!

If the home was built after 1976, the serial number is on the backing plate. This is the piece of steel that runs across the front of the home, and to which the hitch would be attached. The code says the number must be 3/8" in height, and be located on the foremost crossmember, numbers must not be stamped into hitches or draw members.

They could be covered with rust, or might be be behind skirting, and can difficult to find, but they are there. If you find rust you may need to lightly sand off the oxidation to get a clear view of the numbers.
