We are working with a developer of manufactured home communities and will be designing a recreation center that will have a community storm shelter in the basement. I understand that from one of your press releases that you are compiling information on existing community storm shelter designs. I would appreciate information & contacts for all resources you have regarding the design & construction of community storm shelters. We need research this information as soon as possible so your quick response is appreciated. Thank you for your help.

RE: storm shelters
A big thank you to Frank Walters, PE, Vice President of Technical Activities for the Manufactured Housing Institute for help on this answer!
Dear Chris,
We surveyed community owners a couple of years ago and found not much in the way of specific designs for community shelters.
At the same time, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) contracted with Texas Tech University, Clemson and others and produced, in July 2000, the document, "Design and Construction Guidance for Community Shelters, FEMA 361. It is a sizable document, in a 3-hole binder, with two case studies, that contain generic designs for shelters:
Appendix C - Stand Alone Community Shelter (North Carolina), using design guidance from ASCE 7-1998; and,
Appendix D - School Shelter Design (Kansas), with a design wind speed of 250 mph.
We understand that copies may still be available from the FEMA publications warehouse, at 1-800-480-2520; press option #3, and ask for a copy of FEMA 361 - Design and Construction Guidance for Community Shelters. When we received our copy a year ago, there was no cost. It also comes with a CD copy.
Good luck with your design,
